Spirit Pre-Seal is a water based seal that works by penetrating into the stone. After drying the seal will stop capillary action in the stone. This will prevent any water or water based staining materials from absorbing into the stone. This is very important in stopping water marking from occurring during the laying process and assist future stain prevention by providing a foundational product that performs for many years.

Spirit Pre-Seal will not affect adhesion or interfere with the laying of the stone, but will act as a grout release to assist in the removal of grout haze, this is important as the use of acid products can damage some stones. If the stone is not going to be exposed to oil or food that may contain oil, then pre-seal will act as a final seal with years of performance. If the area is going to be used for entertainment or food areas, the stone should be further sealed with Spirit Water-based Premium Seal.

COVERAGE

Coverage will depend on porosity of tiles, temperature and method of application. Use full strength, do not dilute.

Approximate coverage’s area:

• Terracotta 1 litre per 8-10 m²
• Slate 1 litre per 10-12 m²
• Limestone 1 litre per 6-8 m²
• Travertine 1 litre per 10-12 m²

APPLICATION

Dipping

This is the most preferred way of applying Pre-Seal as it will seal all six sides and assure that the seal is applied evenly through the stone.

Lambswool

A lambswool applicator can be used; in order to seal the stone properly you must make sure that the sides of the stone are sealed as well.

Spraying

This technique is quiet fast however it is important that you don’t let the sealer pool on the stone as this can cause an excess problem.

Once the stone has been sealed with Pre-Seal by any of the above methods it is important that the sealer can dry and cure properly. The stone now needs to air dry, if they are stacked wet or packed pack in a crate they will not dry and the sealer may not perform. Spirit Pre-Seal needs 24 hours to cure fully before they can be laid. It is recommended that the stone is wiped with a white cotton cloth before stacking; this will prevent the tile sitting in a puddle of Pre-Seal. The above picture is showing how you can to stack the tiles correctly.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

1. Always do a small trial area first in an inconspicuous area to ensure application competence and satisfaction with results.
2. Ensure surface to be sealed is sound and dry, thoroughly clean and free from oils, grease, paint, and grout or cement residue, efflorescence or acid.
3. Apply Spirit Pre-Seal undiluted using a dense sponge squeegee mop, Lambswool applicator or pump garden sprayer.
4. Work to full tiles to avoid over-lapping and remove any sealer which has not been absorbed after 2 minutes with a dry absorbent cloth.
5. On very porous surfaces only – such as Mexican terracotta, a second coat may be required. Accordingly, repeat stages 2 & 3 above. However, wait a minimum of 4 hours before applying the second coat.
6. In the event of excess sealer being left on the tiles a white haze/bloom may form. This can be removed using a nylon scouring pad and a very dilute solution of Spirit Phosphoric Acid Cleaner or Spirit H.D.C. The tiles must then be washed with plain water to ensure no residue remains.
7. Spirit Pre-Seal cures fully within 24 hours. However, the sealed tiles can be walked on after about 30 minutes.

Regular daily cleaning: Use Spirit Neutral Cleaner
